Flea Market Finds And A Couple Of Questions For My Friend Debra.

I'd like to share some of my recent and not so recent flea market finds with everyone.

Some of you might know that I'm a craigslist addict! Well I admit to being a bargain shopping addict period *winks* The hunt is so exhilarating! Plus it keeps me off my bum....nuff said.

Craigslist is where I found this garden cherub. He'd been under some trees for some time. $95 which is quite a lot for me, but it was love so home he came.
Do you see the column base he's standing on? I found a matching set of two of these for $30 on....yep you guessed it.....craigslist!

Here comes my expert question for my friend Debra (Don't call her Debbie....Trust me on this one *winks*) from the beautiful blog Acquired Objects . Do NOT click on this link if you're prone to drooling OR if the sight of too much beauty makes you want to throw out everything in your house and start over! (Trust me on this too because that's how I felt *winks*)
Debra is a fine antique textiles dealer and connoisseur of the exquisite. And by fine I mean FINE! Like sell an arm or leg or first born fine!
Now if anyone else wants to give this one a shot I'd love to hear from you too!

I found this set of chairs for $35 at a garage sale of sorts a while back...It was actually more of a junk store sale with stuff in a huge garage.
The lady I purchased them from told me they were Swedish. I'd never seen a set quite like them before. They'd been completely stripped (I could cry!) and had  horrible polyester brown plaid upholstery on the seats. Which I promptly ripped off. I can still see small vestiges of white paint here and there. I felt so sorry for them sitting there all nekkid and unloved. My husband tried to dissuade me from buying them but (as usual) that only made me more determined.
My neighbor came over to take a look at them for me. She's also an antique lover and knows more about furniture than I do. She thought they looked Swedish also, and thought they might possibly be 18th century? They are completely pegged together. They appear to have been recovered many times. There are lots of nail holes. The carving is all hand done. The back splats are slightly curved to make them more comfortable. Any ideas peeps?

I also found a purse at the Value Village seen here with the chairs.

The large lidded basket was a Goodwill find for $14.99.
Close up on the leg detailing.
Peg detailing.
I thought they might look beautiful stained in gray?

Here is my dear friend Christine with another gray Swedish chair. What do you think? Would my chairs look good in this same gray? Or perhaps I should paint them white?

I'm sharing this purse (?) because it's an example of how I'm very influenced by my favorite bloggers. Do you ever find yourself buying things for this reason?
This is my $4.99 piece from the Value Village. It's made of what appears to be old velvet. The tassels and threading are metallic
I thought it looked very 1920's.

Close up,
Well when I spotted this piece it reminded me straight away of a picture I saw on Debra's blog in a post about her amazing textiles HERE Again the drool alert is in effect. AND you might also want to sell some organs...just sayin'
Could this possibly be an occasion where education meets opportunity? (Aka luck!)

This picture below that I stole  borrowed  (Sorry Debra I'll remove it if there's any problem I promise) is one of the divine pieces of antique Italian velvet from around 1600 that Debra owns. Can you say "TEXTILE ENVY?"  Doesn't it look a little tiny bit like mine? *Hands clasped in prayer* It's even a similar shape?
What do you think Debra? Could mine be worth a little finger? Or maybe just a fingernail? *winks*

Another CL find. Asking price $75...taking price $65. It has a squishy down cushion and is very petite. Perfect for the end of a bed or in my case a home gym which I use (Rarely) to put on my running shoes.  The 1960's greeny gold upholstery is actually growing on me!

This sweet little petit point pillow was a $20 find at a local antique mall. It helps to break up all that greeny gold lol!
Well that's my finds for this week. I hope you'll come back next week for some more flea market fun!

Vanna... thanks for the sweet compliment on my new MP Bag post! BTW I'm drooling over that Bag you scored... $4.99... unbelievably great score!!! It looks to be an Antique Vestment Piece. Perhaps the little Bag that would hang inbetween an Antique Odd Fellows Ritual Ceremonial Vestment/Sash? I've actually seen that pattern before on an Antique Religious piece of Fabric... but since I'm not Catholic I'm not familiar with all of the Vestment pieces and what they were purposed for.

Those chairs look very similar to some of the Scandanavian types I see in decorating books, I think they'd look great in the colors you are thinking of... though I love the upholstery 'as is', but I'm weird like that! *wink*

Paint the chairs a pale gray. I love your green settee/sofa. Your thrift store has unbelievable things at even more unbelievable prices! What do you do with it all seeing as how you go antiquing on a very regular basis?

Ms. Vanna,I am no expert, but, I think your chairs are Italian. from the picture they look like they were made of oak. Sweeds did not use oak, at least I don't think they did???!!!???? I do not like oak, but your chairs are very nice. It is hard to say about the age, as pegged thing can be done at any time or place. If you stain them the oak grain will become more pronounced, to me that strong grain takes away from the elegance of the chairs. I would say this time to paint them. Italians used a lot of gray, but they may have painted these chairs, yellow, peach or turquois. I would not be aftaid to be creative, after all they were stripped once and they can be stripped again. If you choice gray, I would high light them with white. One way to do this, is with white as a base coat and then gray and rub the gray away while still wet.Like around the edge of the back or the inside of the slats, nap of the leg. I would also use a flat base paint. If you use shine or eggshell, the brush strokes and vains of the oak will be bad. Spray would be the best solutation. Perhaps an auto body shop in your town would do it for you. The finish and color would depend where you want to use them. Italian would never be painted white. But if you choice white, fine, as they are your now. What a great buy. I would love them painted and use on a screen porch, any where that is not so formal, because they would add an element of surprise to a not so formal space. .Even a pale sea form green would be fun trimmed in a darker green or peach, I just get so tired of white. If you chairs are sweedish, they would ,maybe, have been white. They did a lot od white.I better shut up now. I want to come shop with you!!!! L and H. Richard and Sissy

I think the chairs would look lovely in a limewashed grey with a robin's egg blue linen seat.
I just bought that same putti (Winter) on a pedestal from Craigslist for $150! Seriously! In October of last year!
I wonder what happened to Spring, Summer and Autumn?
I am thinking about painting a free French Buffet I just got from Craigslist. I willl post it later.
Also, what do you think about putting the Biedermeier secretary in the same room as my newly acquired pier mirror?
Oh! I am also posting a grotto stool for paint advice, although I am leaning toward gold leaf.
Please come by later and bring all your talented friends!
ps Please don't sell your organs too, there will be a glut and the value will plummet!

Ewww, love your cherub and great price and I’m telling you right now I’m never reading one of your posts again when I’m on the phone with a client who was rattling on….I burst out laughing, you’re too funny! OK, as for your chairs…amazing buy my friend! Don’t not paint them white please! They’re Swedish Gustavian style chairs from the 19th
century and I’m sick someone stripped them. Your chairs have an added bonus of having that great little detail on the legs, typically the detail would have a square/oblong shaped flower. Your detail is typically used on French furniture but the reason your chairs have this detail comes from the Swedes traveling to France and soaking up the styles of Louis in 1770 at Versailles. If your chairs had the original paint your chairs would be worth in the neighborhood of $4400, stripped about $1800. If I were you I would take them to a professional and have the finish put back the way they should have been. Your bag, another great buy, you get a fingernail…lol. You were right about the details/trims on the bag being from the twenties but your fabric is from the 19th century, Krefeld Germany. Krefeld produce a lot of amazing copies of long past fabrics, your bag is worth about $225. So great buys all around, I don’t mind you borrowed a picture since you gave credit, thank you. You have a wonderful eye Vanna I hope I helped you some!

Debra,
“winks” for the Debra thing…….

Oh my goodness Debra! You made my day!! So a fingernail on the bag but part of a little finger (maybe a digit) on the chairs!! Thanks so much my friend! I knew you'd have the answers *winks* Vanna

Oh Vanna, I wish I was shpping with you again. You are just so good in finding the most exquisite pieces at bargain prices. Maybe you can have the lovely chairs repainted or restained to it's original color. Do you know what it used to be? The purse is so unusual, I love the fringes....Christine

Vanna,

Amazing! I just love all your finds! Your home is stunning! I don't know where you find all these fancys for such good deals! The 'frenchy' stuff around here is so hard to find, and expensive to boot! I've got a Valentine's post coming soon (as soon as I clear the mess and snap the photos. . . )

Those chairs are amazing! Do some kinda of colored stain on the chairs. That way some of the wood grain still shows through and they won't look so fresh painted!

I'm gonna have to start looking at Craigs List! lol!

First, I LOVE your blog! Right up my alley! And that purse for 4.99? Really? You've just inspired me to hit craigs list. I'm an eBay afficianado, but completely inept at craigslist. Any suggestions on how to search for items like you found? Is there key words that help?

Oh my word. I can't believe your fabulous finds. They are wonderful. Your chairs are stunning and I think the gray would be fabulous on them. Beautiful carving and peg detail. Your garden statue is also wonderful. Love it. That little purse is fabulous and yes I do see the similarities to your friends. Beautiful find. I think my favorite has to be the settee. I adore it. Such a wonderful piece and yes, I even like the upholstery color. Stunning. Just keep shopping, it's so fun to see what you find. Hugs, Marty

OMG Vanna... I JUST read your comment on my Exotic Post where you asked for a Turkish Coffee... this is getting eerie because... I had only JUST bought some Turkish Coffee last night!!! (Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi brand) You must be sending psychic vibes my way because I wasn't even in the store looking for Turkish Coffee, I was on a Mission for Tulsi Tea, which they didn't have... and I gravitated strongly towards the Turkish Coffee purchase! PS: I have never bought Turkish Coffee before so I had to read the cannister to even figure out how it's supposed to be brewed!!!!!!! *whooooooo...chills* Had to share that with you because it was so weird!

Wow !!!! You are lucky to live where you do. Folks around here are poor and they have always been poor. You will not find things like that on craigslist, or estate sales, just junk ! I love the chairs and the small sofa, makes me jealous ! lol
